If you’ve ever hired or managed or taught, you know the feeling.

People are just begging to be told what to do. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I think the biggest one is: “If you tell me what to do, the responsibility for the outcome is yours, not mine. I’m safe.”

When asked, resist.

The statement, “tell me what to do”, truly caught my attention, to which I quickly commented back:

I don’t like asking that question because it limits me. Rather, I’d ask them, “What do you need?”…And after listening and getting to know them better as well as assessing the situation further, I now have a better opportunity to tell them, “Let me tell you what I think you need, and this is what I can do to help you succeed.”

It even rhymes. Just my $0.02.

Happy First Tuesday of the Year 2010! Similar to my blog post on the first Monday of the year, I’ll be copying and pasting a rough draft of a Social Media Marketing Outline on here.

Marketing Plans, per se, come in many different forms and fashions–however, despite their differences, the good ones do hit upon the most important points that a Marketing Plan should cover. The outline that I have included below, however, is not a sample of a General Marketing Plan outline. It is specifically a Social Media Marketing Plan Outline, and as I have reiterated in many of my posts scattered across the world wide web, a Social Media Marketing Plan must tie into the General Marketing Plan. It should not be a stand-alone plan. Anything without a solid foundation is bound to collapse.

I’m still fueling my brain with a Triple Shot Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks (Venti, always), so please bear with the very rough draft that I’m about to share with you. Just like in yesterday’s post about my Social Media Marketing Talking Points (Draft), any recommendations, reactions, feedback… (throw in: Starbucks gift cards)…would be greatly appreciated.

Oh – one more thing, this is geared towards a Public Sector Social Media Marketing Plan so there really isn’t a need for lead generation, etc…and Customer Service would probably be called something else.

Lastly, my posts and views don’t necessarily represent the views of my employer, clients, probono clients, friends, family, or Starbucks…you get the point. These are but a collection of my findings, observations, random thoughts, and caffeinated views. I’m not here to self-promote, I’m here to brainstorm and find ways to improve. So, is that a good enough blogger disclosure statement?

Rough Draft: Social Media Marketing Outline

I. Executive Summary

II. Introduction

Background

Policy/Governance

Purpose of the Plan

Planning Approach

III. Goals and Objectives

IV. Situational Analysis

V. Audience Analysis

Target Audience

Primary

Secondary

Target Audience Behavior and Needs

VI. Market Segmentation

Categories

Composition

How to Reach Them

VII. Environmental Scan

Demographic Environment

Economic Environment

Social and Cultural Environment

Technological Environment

Political and Legal Environment

VIII. SWOT Analysis

Strengths

Weaknesses

Opportunities

Threats

Additional Factors for Consideration

IX. Social Media Strategy

The draft outline for this section has been posted here.

X. Resource Planning

(I am SO tempted to add a Responsibility Matrix on here, though that’s traditionally used in Project Management. We shall see. Who likes being traditional, anyway?)

XI. References

XII. Appedix

(For Tables and Figures)

So, that’s my rough draft. What do you think???

NOTE: I just posted this question on LinkedIn. In hindsight, I should’ve posted it under “Internet Marketing” instead of “Viral Marketing” as it appears that there are more people that look at “Internet Marketing”. I also posted it under “Public Relations” this time, to see the kind of response that I’d get.

You may not agree with me, but as of 2010, I decided to separate my personal posts from my seemingly-work-related posts. I know everyone’s different but I feel like I’m operating on left-brain-mode more, whenever I’m on my Community Connect blog where I mostly talk about Social Media.

So, I’ve decided to finally publish my ahapedia.com blog, and it’s a place where I mostly blog using my right brain, if that makes sense. I just didn’t want to log-in to my wordpress account to compose a blog post, thinking that I’m at work all over again. Please don’t get me wrong: I do enjoy posting on this site, Community Connect, but there are times when I have to disconnect, so to speak.

So, if you feel like following my blog re: my adventures, creations, discoveries, and reflections (and hopefully that of others, soon), please visit my other blog at ahapedia.com/blog. Happy reading!

Happy First Monday of the Year 2010!

My big To-Do today is to have a social media strategy discussion with someone. For starters, I have listed some talking points that reinforces that a social media marketing strategy is but a part of a General Marketing Strategy. As I had mentioned on LinkedIn not too long ago, a social media marketing strategy cannot be a stand-alone strategy.

Here’s a draft of my talking points (please note that this section is but one section of the Social Media Marketing Plan–yes, a target audience has already been identified).

Any additional feedback/recommendations/reactions would be much appreciated. After all, my brain is still in PTO mode from the holidays. Happy New Year, anyway!

Revisit Existing Marketing Strategy
What is it? Does one exist?
Does it need to be changed?
If so, what needs to be changed?
What can your team do now, what should your team do now, what can your team do later?

Listen to online conversation
Why you should listen
What to listen for:
Share of Conversation vs. Share of Voice
Tone of Voice
When to listen
Who should listen
How to listen
Listening Tools: Freemium vs. Subscription

Set goals and objectives
What to measure
Baseline
Target

Identify influencers
Who are they? (i.e. bloggers: what kind of bloggers?)
What are they talking about?
Does/will it impact the organization? If so, how?
What are they passionate about?
Where are they? (Groups, forums, online communities, etc.)
When do we engage and why?
When do we not engage, and why?

Develop content strategy
By capability
Tier 1: High Control, Little Coordination (What your team can produce internally within the department) <currently of low interest to audience>
Tier 2: Some control, Moderate Coordination <currently of some interest to audience>
Tier 3: Low Control, High Coordination <currently of high interest to audience>

Challenge: How can your team make Tier 1 content more interesting?
By market segment

Create and deliver content
Who will create content, based on content strategy? (Who will deliver?)
How to deliver (i.e. social media platform)
When to deliver (i.e. time-zone specific, how often, etc.)
Integrate with traditional marketing
Online (i.e. SEO)
Offline

Engage and facilitate conversations
Create viable programs and campaigns
Blogger Relations Program
Community Engagement Plan

Measure results, i.e. engagement
Frequency
Methodology
Tools
Quantitative vs. Qualitative
Reporting

Evaluate existing strategy based on evolving needs
How often?
By whom?

What’s your personality type? Did you know that you can take a free personality test at www.mypersonality.info? Before you scoff a the .info extension, please take a moment to continue reading.

Knowing your personality profile, your preferences, and your character is instrumental in deciphering how you fit in within your respective community (among other things). I can go on and on, but I’m not a Psychology Major. I’m just here to show you some free tools on the web.

Below is my personality profile, based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). I’m an INTJ! Most will disagree that I’m introverted but in reality being an extrovert is not my preference. Rather, I see extroversion as a requirement that must be done well, one that must be done genuinely and with purpose. Otherwise, I’d rather not do it at all. While introversion is my “core self” (innate), extroversion is my “developed self” (adaptive).

Before I begin to bore you to death, the graph below summarizes my profile in its most simplistic form (for a larger view, please click on the image). Sometimes, I wish everything can be better explained using tables, graphs, and pictures!

My caffeine addiction has led me to meeting another new blogger! No, we did not meet at Coffeeholics Anonymous, but on Twitter. I have learned many things since connecting with him last month: I have yet to visit the local coffee shop, Cafe Laufer, as well as coffee town Holualoa. Soon, I’ll be contacting the auto body shop that he had referred to have the big dent on my vehicle fixed before the lease ends in April! Oh – and thanks to him, I have added the DeskPro Keurig machine to my wishlist. Is it Follow Friday on Twitter yet? He’s definitely one worth following!

Recently, he mentioned something about starting a blog and naming it “Grease Monkey Hands”…

I could never grasp the concept until I read his very first blogpost, “The Hands of a Grease Monkey,” today! Now it all makes sense! He was even featured on the Honolulu Advertiser back then, in which Will Hoover wrote:

“[He has] the hands of a grease monkey, the soul of a poet and handwriting that Oscar Wilde might have envied”.

His first post is about a story of an automotive technician (himself) who also happens to have a passion for “writing”, i.e. calligraphy.

Next, he will be telling us his reason for starting a blog and what he plans to blog about. I’d be interested to see more of his work and what he can do with a vintage Waterman fountain pen! Great stuff! I’m honored to be the one to feature the launch of his blog!

I have been caffeine-free for over 24 hours. For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you’ll know where I’m coming from. My Twitter handle says it all: @coffee_tweets.

As a result, I find myself rechanneling my caffeine hyperactivity onto something else: Chocolate-covered Macadamia nuts. Right now, I have a wide assortment of them in front of me. Please help me decide…

Thank you!!!

I was reading Chris Brogan’s post, “The Problems with Friends Lists”, and ended up posting a long comment that would’ve been better off expressed in the form of a blog. I’ve been wanting to blog about this since yesterday, anyway, as I’ve been reading/hearing lots of uproar re: Facebook’s new privacy settings.

While I’m not a real big fan of Facebook as seen in my previous posts, it still serves its purpose for me…so there’s really no point to disengage or delete my account (or even, ignore it, just as I have done with Friendster, MySpace, Plaxo, Hi5, and hmm, what else?)…until it hits a trigger point.

This time, however, I think I can defend Facebook (as if my one little opinion would matter to the giant). People complain about the new privacy settings all too quickly–that they couldn’t hide their friends list, that people can see the pages they are a fan of, etc., etc… That’s not necessarily true. I revisited my privacy settings (which you should do from time to time, anyway–don’t wait for Facebook to tell you) and when I viewed what it would look like to the public, it showed nothing but my name and profile picture (which is what I had wanted, anyway). Twitter, LinkedIn, and my blog say a whole lot more about me! Just my two cents, FWIW: Always check your online identity just like how companies do brand monitoring. Do a google search on your name, check how your Facebook search results look like from the vantage point of someone who isn’t your friend or your friend’s friend…you get the point.

If you’re really that worried about your privacy, then be proactive, not reactive.

_________________________________________________________________________

Anyway, I’ve copied and pasted the comment that I had posted on Chris Brogan’s blog (this is the longest comment I have ever written):

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It all depends on the end user, IMHO. I don’t allow SNSs to dictate my friending and unfriending behaviors. I don’t wait for it to tell me to double-check my privacy settings…I do my due diligence to make sure that “what I want still stands.” The average user never knew that the default privacy settings have been horrible for a while; Facebook’s rare warning was what brought it to the surface, hence the recent misguided uproar.

In real life, is there really such a mechanism or algorithm that puts your friends in front of you so that you can interact with them more? I’d say take charge of your friendships/relationships. I’d take a more proactive role by seeking them out from amongst the large crowd. I don’t rely on my newsfeed to tell me how my close friends are doing. I go straight to their wall. If we really want to have our own smaller community, we can form a Group, just like in real life. If I don’t really know a person, anyway, OR if I don’t want him/her in my semi-inner circle, I won’t accept the friend request. If you’re kinda on the fence, there used to be a way to still add that friend but at the same time, customize what that friend can see on your page (I’ve never had to use this option so I’m not sure if it’s still there). Or, take an even more proactive approach: if you know that your “unfriendable” person is on Facebook but you don’t want him/her on there, stay ahead of the game by blocking him/her before he/she decides to add you (read: stalker). It’s much less painful to do preventive maintenance that way rather than accept the request and unfriend later (damage control).

Again, it all depends on the end user and what the objective is for being on Facebook. Different SNSs may serve different purposes for the same user. For me, Facebook has worked very well (so far)…and because I’ve carefully set up my privacy settings to where I want it to be, I don’t get very many “weird” friend requests to worry about…at least, for now.

Now that you got me started, I’m thinking: what a long comment! I should’ve blogged about this, instead. (Happy Holidays, Chris! Your blog has helped with my Social Media research since January 2009.)
